How To Fit More In A Smaller Space

30th Mar 2016

More people are deciding to shed large homes and try out small space living. You don’t need to move into a shed sized home, but you can manage to raise a family even in a small townhome, if you have the drive to make small space living work.

You need to be well skilled at organizing your belongings, and small space living won’t work well for people that like to collect and hold on to a lot of belongings. You don’t have to skim down to owning nothing though, you just need to know what is important and have a place for everything.

Get Organized

No matter what size home you live in, or how much stuff you own, organization is important if you want a neat and orderly home. There are a few things that go into having an organized home. You may need to buy some totes to pack up things you don’t need this season or right now.

You may also want to invest in a closet organizer, or two, depending on how many bedrooms you have. These can give you a lot of extra space for clothing, shoes, and other items, and they free up some of the space taken up by cumbersome dressers.

Use All The Space You Have

You may not immediately recognize the glory of wall space, but as you attempt to fit more items in a smaller home, you’ll find that using wall space can be helpful. You could have extra cupboards put into your kitchen, in order to have more room for gadgets and dishes. You could simply put up some shelving as well.

Purchase space savers for your cupboards as well. They will help you stay organized and find more room. Plus, you’ll never lose a lid again.

Weed Out Stuff

There are many ways to declutter an apartment or home. You can pick what works for you, but there are some tools that can really help you get and stay organized.

When you have items that you don’t use on a regular basis, or things that you haven’t used in months, get rid of them. Have your children go through their own clothes and toys every six months and get rid of items they don’t use anymore, or don’t fit into anymore.

Rent Storage Space

If you just feel like you cannot let go of things, or you have a lot of family heirlooms or collectibles you just don’t feel right about getting rid of, consider renting a self storage unit to keep them in. You can find units with regulated temperatures, that are safe places to keep all of the things that are important to you.

Just because something doesn’t fit into your home, or into your life, doesn’t mean you have to get rid of it. Maybe they will be great items to pass down to your children when it’s time for them to have their own homes.
